The Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also known as the Indian Engineering Services (IES) Examination, is a competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. The purpose of the ESE is to recruit engineers for various engineering services and technical positions within the Indian government. Here are some key features and details about the Engineering Services Examination:

  1. Examination Stages:
  • The ESE consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview).
  • The Preliminary Examination serves as a screening test, while the Main Examination and Personality Test are used for the final selection of candidates.
  1. Engineering Services Categories:
  • The ESE examination is conducted for the recruitment of engineers in four major categories:
    a. Civil Engineering
    b. Mechanical Engineering
    c. Electrical Engineering
    d. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
  1. Eligibility Criteria:
  • Candidates must meet certain eligibility criteria, including age limits, educational qualifications, and nationality, to appear for the ESE examination.

  • Subjects include engineering mathematics, general principles of engineering, and specific engineering subjects depending on the category.
  1. Training:
  • After successful selection through the ESE examination, candidates undergo training at specialized institutes such as the Indian Engineering Services Academy (IESA) in Uttarakhand or other designated training centers.
  1. Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Engineers selected through the ESE are placed in various technical and managerial positions within government departments, including the Indian Railways, Central Water Engineering Service, Central Engineering Service (Roads), and more.
  • They are responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing infrastructure projects and technical functions related to their respective engineering disciplines.
  1. Career Progression:
  • ESE officers have opportunities for career growth and can rise to senior positions within their respective engineering services.
  • They may also be involved in policy formulation, project management, and research and development activities.
  1. Examination Date and Notification:
  • The UPSC releases a notification for the ESE examination annually.
  • The examination typically takes place in January or February.

The Engineering Services Examination is highly competitive, and candidates need to prepare diligently for all three stages of the examination. The ESE offers an excellent career opportunity for engineering graduates who wish to serve in government organizations and contribute to the development of infrastructure and technology in India.
